In the late 1980s to mid 90s, professional beach volleyball was more than a sport, it was a cultural phenomenon waiting to happen. On the beaches of Southern California, a rebellious group of athletes, promoters and larger-than-life personalities transformed a simple game played in the sand into one of America’s most unlikely entertainment spectacles. The crowds grew. The money followed. Rivalries became legendary. And the players became stars.

At the center of it all were competitors like Karch Kiraly, Sinjin Smith, Randy Stoklos, Tim Hovland, Mike Dodd and a generation of athletes who helped define what professional beach volleyball could become. They weren't just playing for championships. They were building a sport from the ground up, navigating rivalries, egos, promoters, sponsors, television, money and the relentless pressure to keep the party going. For a brief, exhilarating moment, it seemed like beach volleyball was destined to become one of America's next major professional sports.

But success brought its own set of problems. As the sport exploded, competing interests, personalities and business decisions began pulling it in different directions. The same forces that helped make professional beach volleyball exciting and unpredictable also threatened to tear it apart. Within a few short years, a sport that had seemed unstoppable found itself fighting for its very survival.

KINGS OF THE BEACH takes audiences inside that extraordinary rise and near-collapse through the voices of the people who lived it. Featuring 28 interviews with the athletes (including Kerri Walsh Jennings, Misty May Treanor and more), promoters and personalities who were there, along with rare and never-before-seen archival footage, the film reveals the stories behind the rivalries, the personalities behind the legends, and the improbable business of turning beach volleyball into a professional sport.

But this isn't simply a story about volleyball. It's a story about athletes with enormous personalities, competition, fame and the price of success. It's about a group of people who believed they could turn a game into something much bigger, and actually did. Their story captures a uniquely American moment when athletes weren't just participating in a sport; they were creating an industry, inventing a lifestyle and building a culture around themselves.

Funny, nostalgic, surprising and occasionally outrageous, KINGS OF THE BEACH is a time capsule of an era when the lines between professional sport, entertainment and Southern California culture were almost nonexistent. For those who lived through it, it's a trip back to a remarkable time. For those who didn't, it's the story of how a sport most people never expected to become famous nearly became one of the biggest things in the country.

They didn't just play the game. They built the show. And for a while, everyone wanted to be a part of it.
